The House of Cards is a cafe rooted within the community of Crydon, London. It is thin and transparent. The structural elements all bear different colour treatment and hold the roof together. The colours are inspired from Croydon’s street art and its diverse local community.

Two levels have different goals: the cafe is the centre of activity whereas the belvedere is a beacon, attracting attention to what is happening below.

Traces of the opaque brick wall of the previous cafe are discreetly kept. The new glazed facade bears fritted patterns of the previous openings. The past and present of the cafe are combined in a shimmering facade, uniting the cafe to the gardens.

As the years pass, the cards are shuffled. The cafe grows with the residents. Always changing and always versatile, it is the centre of their collective memories.
